Cheering their way to the top
The LaPorte High School cheerleading team competed at the Midwest Hoosier Open on Sunday, February 28 in the Michigan City High School Gymnasium.
LaPorte took first place out of 40 competing teams. Due to their win, they have a free ride to Nationals in Sandusky, Ohio, at Kalahari but are unsure if they will be attending due to expenses being tight.
“I think this is a very skilled team, and their hard work really paid off. They brought me to tears during their performance and just made me so proud,” Coach Lidgard said.
Though the team took first place, it was not easy. Due to the absence of a team member, the team had to completely rework their routine in the matter of three hours and find a way to fill in the gap from their missing member.
“I think our hardwork and dedication to each other really made us perform and stand out better against the other teams that were there. I think that our team was generally happier and that led to our win,” Lacy Shuble, varsity cheerleader, said.
At the end of the competition, Coach Lidgard was awarded the Coach of the Year award for having attended the Midwest Hoosier Open for the most consecutive years.
The cheer team has another competition on March 13th in Hobart. The team and their fans are hoping they can make it to regionals and take home another first place win.
