Humans Of LPHS: Teja Simmons

“Coming from a predominantly white school, students like me do not usually get an African-American influence in school. The only influence we have is Mrs. Blakemore, but many of us do not have her in class so we can not really bond with her. That being said, when we need to go to a teacher who can understand people of color, we end up going to a teacher who hasn’t faced a struggle like racism or discrimination. My own friend of 7 years said the N-word multiple times knowing I am black. It kind of breaks my heart that many people at our school use this word as joke not knowing the backstory behind it.”
