Deserving Children’s Event
The annual Deserving Children’s Event brightened the holidays of many of LaPorte County’s youngest citizens on December 4, 2018. LPHS students participated in helping the program run smoothly.
The La Porte Jaycees Deserving Children’s Shopping Tour is an event where about 600 La Porte County children get the opportunity to go Christmas shopping for clothes, necessities, and toys. The children are selected by their schools, and then the Jaycees pair them up with chaperones to take them shopping.
“It is a Christmas Tradition for my family. We have participated in this wonderful event for years. I love having the opportunity to provide kids with something to be excited about for the holidays. It’s a magical evening for all,” Mrs. Lebo, LPHS art teacher, said.
The chaperones pick the children up from their house, take them to the Community Building at the fairgrounds where they get dinner from McDonald’s, a stocking, and a visit with Santa. After they visit the Community Building they then traveled to Wal-Mart where they were able to spend $125.
LPHS GR students helped stuff stockings for the kids on preparation of the event are Becca Marxman, Aubrey Gierke, Paige Stout, Alyvia Messer, Abby Casto, Alyssa Bremer, and Delaney Messer helped the Jaycees.
“I thought this was a good organization to be apart of because it is a helpful way for children who are less fortunate to receive Christmas gifts,” Marksmen, sophomore, said.
This event has occurred every 48 years with about an average of 600 children each year.
“I have taken children shopping, I have baged at Wal-Mart, and I have been the behind the scenes in charge person of the tour. This event to me means that 600 children in my community will get things for Christmas they might not get if it wasn’t for [this event],” Kim Snyder, future president of the Jaycees, said.
