Squid Game becomes a worldwide sensation
Becoming the first Korean drama to be #1 on the top 10 most-watched shows on Netflix, Squid Game has become a huge topic all across the U.S.
Squid Game is about 456 people who are deep in debt. They are given the opportunity to compete against each other for a large amount of money. The contestants later find out they’re risking their lives, each death adding $100 million into the pot of money. It’s similar to the concept of the Hunger Games, except the players are choosing to participate for a large amount of money involved, showing the effect money has on others. The characters become increasingly desperate and reckless as the show goes on, leaving the viewer hooked as it continues.
According to Wikipedia, the first season aired on September 17th and has made around $900 million in sales. It reached 142 million viewers within the first month of its release, passing Bridgerton as the most-watched show.
Squid Game has nine total episodes, each being roughly an hour long.
“My favorite episode was episode six. It was the most interesting, and it got me hooked on the show,” sophomore Marcy Bearickx said.
Squid Game consists of fantastic characters and even better actors. The main characters are Seong Gi-hun, Cho Sang-woo, Kang Sae-Beyok, Hwang Jun-ho, Oh Il-nam, and Ali Abdul.
“My favorite character would probably be Ali Abdul. I really like his personality and he showed the reality of immigrants in other countries,” sophomore Stephanie Leon said.
Overall, I highly recommend Squid Game to anyone that has Netflix. I’d give it a 9/10 rating, and it shows the impact debt has on people of all ages and backgrounds.
