La Porte hosts national high school basketball tournament

In the first week of January, La Porte hosted the U.S. Marines NIBC National High School Basketball Tournament.

La Porte competed with New Jersey, New York, Washington D. C., and Florida to host the event, but Mayor Tom Dermody and his team were able to persuade the NIBC to have it locally. With Indiana’s history of basketball and the standard La Porte sets within our community, the Maple City won them over.

Dermody was able to bring in ESPN and their marketing team, once they saw the Civic Auditorium they could see the opportunities it had.

After bringing this event into La Porte, Dermody wants it to send a message to surrounding communities and across the state that La Porte is the place to be. He hopes that this new spotlight on La Porte will bring more people here to see all it has to offer, even inspiring those who may have grown up here to see all of the new possibilities to want to come back.

“I want people to say ‘What’s in La Porte, Indiana?’ or ‘Who is La Porte, Indiana,’” Dermody said.

Not only was the publicity good for the town, but with it came a boom for all of the local businesses.

“It should be a special time for businesses for people to enjoy all we have to offer here,” Dermody said.

The tournament included top teams from around the country, including local prep school La Lumiere. The hometown team went 2-1 at the tournament and are currently ranked number 7 in the country according to ESPN.

Overall, this event was successful for La Porte, and it will be back again in 2023.
