McLennan: an athlete’s hero

Michele McLennan, athletic secretary at LaPorte High school, is celebrating her 25th year as a part of LaPorte Community School Corporation.

Growing up, McLennan lived in Hobart, attending Hobart High School and joining its swim team. Soon after her graduation, she married her husband.

“From there, my husband and I traveled until we ended up in LaPorte,” McLennan said.

McLennan was a stay-at-home mother until one of her sons entered second grade at Handley Elementary, where she was asked by the principal to work playground duty and not long after obtained the position as secretary.

She enjoyed her time and the bonds formed at Handley, but another position at a different school opened up. LPHS landed an incredible asset to its staff.

“I was working at Handley Elementary as a secretary and I thought it was time for a change, so I decided to interview for the newly opened secretary position at the high school, and here I am,” McLennan said.

McLennan’s job as LaPorte High School’s athletic secretary is not an easy one. She has to ensure that she keeps up with every student-athlete, their parents, and the sports events.

“I make sure all the athletes are eligible with grades, physicals, Final Forms, and all the paperwork is signed. I take care of all the athletic events, making sure I have people, tickets, and programs available for all the events. I also take care of the money we bring in,” McLennan said.

While juggling all of this, McLennan also makes it her job to make the parents feel comfortable about their children’s athletic careers.

“I believe I affect the parents of the athletes the most. I want them to feel comfortable calling me with any questions. The athletes go through the coaches, but the parents come to me,” McLennan said.

McLennan plans to retire in five years and travel with her husband. She is excited to see her granddaughter in Wisconsin and her sons in Charlotte. Despite her planned retirement, McLennan couldn’t be happier with her job.

“I absolutely love my job. My sons played sports here at LaPorte, and it’s always been like a second home, and since I can work in the athletic department it’s even better. I enjoy coming to work everyday. Mr. Gilliland and Mr. Santana are great people to work with,” McLennan said.

McLennan’s hardwork and dedication to keeping the student-athletes of LPHS safe is appreciated. LPHS will be sad to see her go in just five short years.
