LPHS hosts successful Job Fair

LPHS had its annual Job Fair for seniors to attend on April 19th.
Employees and representatives from around the community came to the high school to promote jobs and opportunities for soon-to-be graduates.
At the Job Fair, students went around to different booths and talked to local companies that came in and presented job descriptions. As seniors, they had the opportunity to show off their resumes and apply for the jobs shown.
“Our community is a little smaller than other places, and this allows a one-to-one interview type scenario where students get to really know the companies instead of having to look at them on the internet. They could actually meet face-to-face with these employers and talk about their skills,” Ms. Vincent, English teacher, said.
Seniors thoroughly prepared for the Job Fair by updating resumes to give out, and students also had a sheet ready to fill out about the booths they visited. Their goal was to engage with at least three organizations and write a reflection stating what the occupation consisted of and also take notes on how they felt the Job Fair went and the conversations they had with employers.
Many students have come out of the Job Fair with multiple job offers and a clearer plan for their future.
“I went up to the YMCA booth and the employer asked me what I was interested in for the YMCA, and I said ‘camp counselor.’ I gave her my resume that had my email in it, and she emailed me offering me the job and asked when I could start,” senior Lillian Greaves said.
Local employers and businesses were impressed with the professionalism of the Slicer students and enjoyed having the opportunity to interact with the soon-to-be graduates.
“I definitely felt like the students were all prepared. They asked good questions and were interested in hearing what employers had to offer. I really enjoyed the format this year. It allowed me to spend more quality time with students and really talk to them and learn more about what’s next for them. I’ve learned that with this career fair it’s important to not only recruit students to hire for open jobs but also to teach students about all the different positions we have at the library. Many students don’t realize that we offer all the same types of jobs that other companies offer and not just librarians. It’s a great way for us to stay connected to the next generation of employees and I always appreciate the opportunity to participate,” De Burke, La Porte County Public Library representative, said.
